INSIGHT

How do I stop feeling like I'm behind everyone else?
There’s a sinking feeling that comes when you compare your life to others and silently conclude:
“I’m behind.”
Behind in career. Behind in love. Behind in finances. Behind in confidence or maturity or life experience.
It’s a quiet anxiety that grows as you scroll, as you watch others succeed, as friends start families or businesses, as younger people achieve things you thought you’d have by now.
But this feeling is built on illusions that are so strong that they can distort the way you see your own life.
Let’s break it open.
Comparison is a distorted mirror, not a measurement
Human beings aren’t designed to compare themselves to thousands of people at once.
For most of history, your comparison pool was your village or tribe. 20 to 50 people at most.
Now it’s millions. And every person you see online is showing their brightest moment, not their real life.
You’re comparing:
• your internal chaos
• to someone else’s curated highlight
• captured in their best lighting
• after dozens of takes
• edited and filtered
You compare your unfiltered life to their performance.
Of course you feel behind. You’re not comparing real to real.
Feeling behind comes from unclear identity, not lack of progress
People who feel behind usually struggle with one core issue:
They don’t know what their life timeline is supposed to look like.
So they borrow someone else’s.
You see someone buy a house.
Someone travel the world.
Someone get married.
Someone launch a startup.
Someone get shredded.
Someone find purpose.
And you think:
“That should be me.”
But should it?
Do you actually want that?
Or do you simply fear being the only one who doesn’t have it?
The moment you define your own values, your own priorities, your own timeline. The feeling of being behind dissolves.
You’re comparing speed, not direction
Some people sprint early and burn out.
Some walk slowly but never stop.
Some pivot at 27, 35, 42, 56.
Some succeed quickly but quietly hate their lives.
Speed means nothing without direction.
You are not behind if you're going in the right direction, even if you’re moving slowly.
You are behind if you're going fast toward something you don’t want.
Life isn’t a race.
It’s a rhythm.
And your rhythm is unfolding exactly as it needs to.
Your past challenges slowed you down, but they also built you differently
Many people underestimate how much their story affects their pace:
• childhood hardship
• unstable homes
• bad relationships
• depression or anxiety
• financial pressure
• limited support system
• cultural expectations
• needing to work early
• trauma or emotional wounds
These things slow you down, but they also build depth, empathy, resilience, self-awareness, and inner strength.
Your journey is heavier because your load was heavier.
But that also means you’re becoming someone with substance, not just accomplishments.
You’re not behind, you’re preparing
There are seasons in life:
• planting
• growing
• blooming
• harvesting
• resting
• rebuilding
Social media only shows the blooming and harvesting phases.
You might be in a building season.
You might be in a healing season.
You might be in a learning season.
You might be in a recovery season.
And guess what?
Seasonality is not failure.
It’s nature.
No tree blooms 365 days a year.
Why should you?
Your timing will make sense later
When you look back one day, you’ll realise:
“If I had received what I wanted earlier, I wouldn’t have been ready for it.”
Life delays things until you have the emotional, practical, and spiritual stability to handle them well.
You’re not late.
You’re becoming ready.
The worst decisions come from rushing because you fear being last.
The best decisions come from alignment, not urgency.
You’re not behind. You’re building a different life than the one you’re comparing yourself to.
Imagine comparing a marathon runner to a rock climber.
They’re not even playing the same game.
Yet that’s exactly what people do in life.
You have a different mission.
A different temperament.
A different background.
A different destiny.
The moment you stop chasing other people’s timelines, your own finally begins.
